Sunday School Curriculum

Sunday School for children infant-12th Grade runs from 10:15a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sundays, restarting on September 9, 2007.

Infants and toddlers may if desired be brought to the Nursery in the West Wing just before 10:15 am; otherwise they and older children go first into the Sanctuary for the first 20 minutes of the Worship Service. Many of the children come forward after the second hymn for the Children's Sermon, following which all grades are dismissed.

The Sunday School is in the eigth year of using the Workshop Rotation structure. Children in grades K- 6 are grouped into three groups (K-1-2, 3-4, 5-6), each of which has one or more "shepherds." Each Sunday each group participates in one of the three "workshops" (story-telling, drama, video/music, crafts/cooking) and "rotates" between all three over a three-week period; the fourth week is devoted to combined activities (videos, games). This month-long "unit" is devoted to teaching a single biblical topic, so that the children hear (for example) the story of Abraham four times in four weeks, each in a different way as it is interpreted through drama, crafts, video, etc. Volunteer teachers typically change from one unit to the next, so that no teacher has to commit to a year-long role, but they are accompanied each week by a member of the Sunday School Curriculum Team.

The provisional schedule for the 2007-2008 year is printed below.

[SS Curriculum Team, staff and volunteers meet regularly to develop curriculum and lesson plans for the “rotation units.”:

The 7th, 8th and 9th grades have individual classroom teachers, and study the Bible with a “life application” emphasis. 7th and 8th graders use the NIV New Adventure Bible and the Serendipity Student Bible. 9th graders, who are preparing for their Confirmation, use a series of Bible studies and also attend a Sunday evening series taught by the Pastor.

High Schoolers who have been Confirmed, as young adult members of the church, further their Christian education through service in the Sunday School as Shepherds, Teachers, Nursery Aides, and also serve as Readers, Ushers and Musicians in the Worship Services.

Questions about the program may be directed to Sunday School Superintendents Vaughan Bogucki and Laurie Remington, Children's Ministries Coordinator Kathy Rowehl, or the Church Office (929-8849).
